How Is Penile Implant Surgery Performed?

The operation takes approximately 1 hour and is performed under spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia. For this purpose, through a small 3-4 cm incision made from the infrapubic area by the abdominal wall of the penis or from the junction of the egg bag, which we call the scrotum of the penis, the slinders of the prosthesis are placed in the tubular cavities of the penis, which we call the corpus cavernosum, and the reservoir is placed in the abdominal cavity and the pump is placed behind the ovary. A small drain is placed to drain out any minor bleeding, which is usually removed within 1-2 days.

Penile Implant Types

Inflatable penile prosthesis
Malleable penile prosthesis, also known as semi-rigid penile prosthesis.

Although there are two and three-piece types of inflatable penile prosthesis, the two-piece one is not preferred much because it does not provide sufficient erection and does not deflate back close to natural. Today, 3-piece ones are more preferred by us urologists and patients because they provide a good erection and their deflated shape is very close to reality. Bendable semi-rigid penile prosthesis are not preferred by patients due to the fact that they are noticeable from the outside of the dress and remain fixed in the erection position continuously.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Penile Implants?

Today, drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors (such as viagra, cialis lifta) are commonly used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and some drug injections into the penis are also used in some patient groups, but these are not a very sustainable treatment method. They are often rejected by patients.In short, penile prosthesis is applied as the last step treatment method in men with severe erectile dysfunction who do not respond to first-line treatment methods. To prevent infection after the operation, you must use the antibiotic given to you regularly
Careful wound care is very important to prevent wound infection.
Your doctor will ask you to inflate and deflate the prosthesis to improve your dexterity at regular intervals until you have intercourse.
